Short definition: Intervention is a staged event, prepared for a person by concerned family and friends to lovingly confront their unhealthy behaviors and lifestyle. With or without a facilitator, the concerned group “sets the stage” for the person’s option to choose health over sickness and untimely death.
Intervention for substance use disorders or unmanageable psychopathology is a vital and diversely understood measure that the loved ones of a substance user or unmanaged person increasingly undertake in order to help their loved one. I have been the personal beneficiary (in 1977) and a facilitator (professionally since 1992) of intervention for most of my adult life, and am pleased to note that at this senior stage of my career, I have formulated an affordable and effective intervention that can be scheduled on relatively short notice.
The neutral ground of conference space in Texas such as an executive center or hotel is ideal for appropriate clinical intervention. Currently Dallas, Houston and San Antonio are the most readily arranged urban centers for a rapid response, clinical intervention with David Petersen. Families who wish may arrange and secure the space for ease of access to participants and control of cost. Privacy and access to comforts (ie restrooms, coffee & food service) are important as the intervention is a psychotherapeutic workshop of duration and intensity. Consideration will be carefully made for the social and geographical logistics of Texas pertinent to the family, friends and needs of the addicted individual in concern.
Advance preparations can be made either by family members or by intervention staff subsequent to initial consultation. The initiation fee does not include cost for advance preparations but can be clearly and fairly priced for families who prefer. There is unmistakable therapeutic value in family participation in the advance preparation tasks that will be identified in initial consultation.
Only full-day (12-hr) interventions are available in Texas, and can be arranged on relatively short notice after an initial consultation of one to two hours depending on the logistical needs appropriate to the group of friends and family. If less than twelve clinical hours are necessary to achieve the agreed goals on intervention day, the remaining hours can remain available as pro-rated credits toward retainer, routine and urgent clinical consultation for future follow-up.
